Inclusion Support
An inclusive school secures opportunities for students with Individual Education Plans to learn alongside their peers in general education classrooms. All Career Tec students, regardless of any challenges they may have, receive high-quality instruction, interventions, and support that enable them to meet success in the Vocational Curriculum. Inclusive Education is truly about including all students together in an effective learning environment. Career Tec supports all learners, regardless of ability, and adapts learning strategies to the needs of the individual student, making sure those needs are met. In inclusive education, students bring their own unique strengths, experiences, and understanding to the classroom.
The Inclusion Specialist’s primary role is to assist students with IEPs and 504 Plans with the Vocational classroom content. While the Vocational Instructor is the subject area expert, the Inclusion Specialist is the expert in disabilities and accommodations. The Inclusion Specialist may also assist students who do not have an IEP or 504 plan as part of the support provided to the class. The Inclusion Teacher works with the Vocational Instructor to tailor assignments to the needs of the individual students in the class and provide scaffolding activities and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students. Each Inclusion Specialist is assigned to several shops, and their time in each shop varies depending on the needs of the students and Instructors. All shops receive Inclusion Support.
The Role of the Inclusion Specialist:
Support the special needs student to facilitate successful student transition to the Career and Technical Program in the General Education setting.
Provide feedback and coaching to support vocational instructors in implementing IEPs and 504 Plans.
Assist classroom teachers in creating materials to support individual students’ needs.
Work with shop teachers and students to implement modifications and accommodations as written in IEPs and 504 Plans.
Provide small group and individual instruction to students in the shop or in a separate setting.
Instruct students in the use of Read and Write for Chrome, a total school assistive technology software.
Support student safety and progress using workplace equipment.
Assist students in developing career readiness skills including behavioral and social-emotional skills.
Build a partnership with families, encouraging their active participation in students’ learning.
Maintain a communication system with parents, teachers, students, and districts.
“Inclusion is based on the belief that students of all abilities have the right to an education that is meaningful, appropriate, and equivalent to that of their peers.”
