LPV Career TEC MEAL PROGRAM

The Lower Pioneer Valley Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) will be participating in the Community Eligibility Provision with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) and the Office for Food and Nutrition Programs. All students enrolled at CTEC are eligible for one free breakfast and/or one free lunch daily. Menus are posted in the cafeteria and on the LPVCTEC.org website.

Students who attend the morning session at CTEC may come to the cafeteria for breakfast between 7:15 AM and 7:45 AM. Lunch is provided to LPVEC Academy students who attend the full-day program and CTEC half-day students when lunch is not provided at their sending school.

Students are required to scan their CTEC ID in the cafeteria when taking their food. Any items other than the standard meals will need to be paid for. This includes seconds, extra milk, etc.

Parents/Guardians can put money in an account for their student to eliminate the need for the student to carry cash. This account is for the convenience of the Parents/Guardians and students and is not intended to be a form of invoicing. When setting up a meal account for the student it is expected the Parents/Guardians will follow the guidelines listed below.

  • Parents/Guardians are responsible for keeping positive balances in their student’s account.
  • Parents/guardians may contact the meal coordinator, Anna Bishop, ABishop@lpvec.org or call 735-2200 Ext. 2225 to request account activity, arrange for payment, or request other information.
  • Notices of low balances and negative balances will be sent home at intervals throughout the school year.
  • Negative account balances are expected to be paid in full as soon as possible.
  • All negative balances must be settled prior to the last week of school.
  • All positive balances will be carried over to the next school year. Graduating seniors must close out their accounts before their final day.

Wellness Policy

The Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative Board of Directors, along with the Lower Pioneer Valley Career and Technical Center Advisory Committee, recognizes the relationship between student well-being and student achievement and promotes a healthy school by supporting wellness, good nutrition, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning environment. All of these components are necessary for students to develop attitudes and health practices that affect their safety and well-being. All cafeteria personnel is allergy/epi-pen trained. In addition, First Aid, CPR, AED, ServSafe, and Allergen Awareness certified staff members are on duty in the cafeteria. The school nurse provides the cafeteria staff with information regarding any student allergies.

Wellness Committee
In the ongoing efforts to ensure our students are healthy and ready to learn CTEC will establish and maintain a Wellness Committee. The committee will review and evaluate the progress of the policy; revise the policy as needed, address school nutrition, education, physical activity, and related issues that affect student health. The Committee will be comprised of CTEC food service representative/nutrition staff, physical education/health staff, school nurse, parent(s), student(s), and any additional staff member designated by the Director/Supervisor of Occupational Education.

The Wellness Policy will be reviewed annually by the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative Board of Directors/Lower Pioneer Valley Career and Technical Center Advisory Committee. Upon approval of the Board of Directors/Advisory Committee, any additions, deletions, or amendments to the policy will be amended in a timely manner.

Nutrition
Meals served in the CTEC Breakfast and Lunch programs will be appealing and attractive and be served in a clean and pleasant setting. Food preparation and all foods and beverages sold or made available to students will meet, at a minimum, nutrition requirements established by local, state, and federal statutes and regulations.

Beverages
Allowed: water or seltzer water without added caloric sweeteners; 4 oz. serving of
100% fruit and vegetable juices; 8 oz. 1% fluid milk, fat-free fluid milk, and nutritionally equivalent non-dairy beverages (to be defined by USDA).
Not allowed: soft drinks containing caloric sweeteners; iced teas; fruit-based drinks that contain less than 100% real fruit; No beverages other than juice, milk, milk substitutes, and water will be sold or provided.

Foods
Nutrition information will be available for non-pre-packaged foods and beverages by
August 1, 2013. (This shall not apply to fresh fruits and fresh vegetables, and food sold during the school day at booster sales, concession stands, and other school-sponsored or school-related fundraisers and events.)

  • Fryolaters will not be used in the preparation of competitive foods.
  • A choice of at least two fruits and/or vegetables will be offered for sale at any location on the school site where foods are sold daily. Such items could include, but are not limited to, fresh fruits and vegetables; 100% fruit or vegetable juice; cooked, dried, or canned fruits (canned in fruit juice or light syrup); and cooked, dried, or canned vegetables (that meet the above fat and sodium guidelines).
  • A food item sold individually:
    • will have no more than 35% of its calories from fat (excluding seeds, and sun butters) and 10% of its calories from saturated fat; all foods should be trans- fat free;
    • will have no more than 35% of its total weight from total sugar except for non-fat and low-fat yogurt which contains a maximum of 30 grams of total sugar per 8 oz. packaged serving and 100% fruit with no added sugars;
    • will contain no more than 230 mg of sodium per item, with the exception of a la carte entrees, which shall not contain more than 480 mg. of sodium per item;
    • all bread and other grain-based products shall be whole grain.

Foods and Beverages

  • No food or beverage shall contain an artificial sweetener
  • No food or beverage shall contain more than trace amounts of caffeine
  • A packaged item may contain no more than one serving per package

Physical Education and Physical Activity and Health Education
All students who attend the LPVEC Academy will participate in physical education classes and
health education classes taught by certified instructors. This program provides the opportunity for all students to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to participate in a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

The physical education program is designed to stress physical fitness and encourage healthy, active lifestyles. The physical education program will consist of physical activities of at least moderate intensity and for a duration that is sufficient to provide a significant health benefit to students, subject to the differing abilities of students.

The health education classes provides students with the opportunity to focus on health lifestyles, health assessments, fitness activities and other appropriate and informational nutrition and physical activity related topics.

Students who participate in the half-day vocational/technical and career education programs at CTEC receive their physical education and health education classes in their sending school as part of their academic program.
